Saw some amazing fish and a turtle.

Anyways, back home safely now, 2006 tour has come to an end.

A dvd of the 'tour' is available for the very generous price of £2, which covers the price of a recordable DVD (so i'm told). getting into america takes about a week, with far to many checks, one of which included al getting stripped searched by a gay customs officer. therefore we missed our connecting flight into los angeles! on leaving LA we tried to change our flight on the same morning as leaving. funnily enough that didnt work, and we ended up being late for our flight out. after waiting on stand by for 8 hours we eventually got our flight to miami.

in LA we went to santa monica boulevard where we bumped into this street entertainer. he started off with some break dancing drawing in a fairly large circle of people. once he had enough people, he started to demand that every person got out a dollar bill and placed it in his bag in the middle. if someone tried to leave he shouted at them and forced them to stay. he even got one girl by the arm and dragged her to the cash machine! when us lads didnt provide him with any money, we were asking for him to get us involved. after some more dancing and more demanding of cash, he got us in the circle and made us dance with him. he told everyone he had been in jail, and not given him money just wasnt funny hommie. not the nicest street entertainer in the world, but he sure made the most money!!

we have also been stuffing our faces with fast food, after 8 weeks of beans and rice in brasil, its nice to get a super size mcdonalds and not finish it! although ordering a meal is harder than you think. i swear the people the states speak english, but they somehow just dont understand you. it took al bout 10 mins to order a big mac and at one point he ended up with a carton of milk. not sure how that happened. in and out burgers are class, so was hanging out with renee in LA, having burgers and playing twister in her house.

currently we are in miami staying at my mate andrews house. he has this amazing appartment which hangs over the ocean. cant ask for a more relaxing place. the weather in miami is hot, so its just chilling out and relaxing til we make it home in a couple of weeks.

COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!

lemons, salt and tequila, oh and dont forget the chillies

the last ten days we have been in mexico city. well not just mexico city. we decided to pull together the funds and rent a car for a 2000km road trip around the country. we travelled for five days visiting various cities and seeing many natural/archaelogical sites, and swiming in both the pacific and gulf of mexico sea.

luckily for us, our car was upgraded to a huge jeep, as the corsa we were supposed to be renting was out of fuel! therefore we were able to live in our car. however sleeping was still trickier than we first thought, with the weather still baking hot and many mosquitoes hanging around. with limited cd's for the journey, we were left with lenny kravitz and shakira to get us by.

the roads were very windey when driving across the huge mountain ranges of mexico, and very flat near the coasts. however every road seemed to be littered with speed bumps, preventing us from driving at great speeds. with extremely hot weather the air con was always on, apart from when we nearly ran out of fuel. driving on empty for 50km and just rollling into the petrol station that we were all praying for.

highlights of the trip have to be the city of acapulco, the gigantic lagoons in cabachanga, sleeping on the empty beaches on the south coast, shaving in mcdonalds, watching the england game in a bar which we got to open especially for us, visiting a city which was created in 500BC, not showering for a week and swiming in the warm sea in vera cruz.

a superb end to our time in mexico was going out with alma and her brother to some traditional bars in the city. getting serenaded by a group of mexicans whilst eating tacos and drinking tequila was definitely a cutural experience.

Chile Con Carne

Its been a while since the last post, but finding internet is harder than you think.

After argentina, we landed in santiago and decided against staying in the city and hopped on a 3 hour bus ride into the mountains. The andes. It was dark and we didn´t really know when to get off. Kev was enjoying his usual travel sleep that we have become so accustomed to. Pretty much, if he´s in a moving object he will sleep. So anyway, we´re on this bus in the pouring rain at night. Each of us are sitting in different parts of the bus, and i see a sign for the place before the place we were thinking of getting off. So I try to wake up kev by calling to him...no response. I then try to get the attention of the girl sitting next to him in portuguese (although she is chilean), and try to ask her to wake him up. The woman next to me thinks that i want to get off the bus, so she gets up and ushers me out of the seat, the bus driver sees all the comotion in his rear view mirror and pulls over to let us off. We quickly got all our stuff and jump off the bus. Moments after the bus pulled away we looked around and realised that we are actually in the middle of nowhere....3 kilometres later in the pouring rain with no waterproofs (except sleepy) we arrived at a hotel which had no space, so one of the valet parkers drove us (in someone else´s car) to the town we were supposed to be at where we lodged for a night.

The next couple of nights we stayed in a log cabin in a nature reserve. They upgraded us to a 5 person cabin and charged us less - much appreciated.

On our last day there, we wanted to climb a mountain. You can´t really go to the andes and not climb a mountain, come on. We spoke to the people there and they said it was too late to start now and, bearing in mind it is winter there, we didn´t have the right attire.
Needless to say, 3 hours later we had reached the top...Me in shorts and a hoody. Its not warm at 1900m high.

(will add pics when get to the states...slow internet aqui)

buenos aires

today the first day in buenos aires, saw sir michael palin, gordan ramsey (obe) and ken livingston hit the streets. each taking their own job seriously, the three men went about visiting churches, art galleries, old buildings and shops. directed by palin, the pace was fairly casual, capturing the heart of such a beautiful city. regular food breaks implimented by ramsey, led us to soak up the european atmosphere and enjoy a selection of hot drinks and cakes. after many hours of walking through central bueno, the rain started to hit hard and livingston led us home with his normal transportational craftmanship. after a lazy early evening nap, ramsey called an 'horzorio' (all you can eat) restaurant was in need. after the ramsey special, livingston led us expertly to a few bars where the local culture was once again absorbed within us! the favourite moment no doubt was an argentine speaking to livingston bout how they hate the english but admire them at the same time. from what palin gathered, argentines think maradona is the best player ever and they love him for his holy hand. even after that, the three men still pondered a purchase for an argetinian footy shirt!

Quando você volta?

Well, our time here is pretty much over. Last night we had a surprise party thrown for us (which we turned up late for - whoops). Already feelin the difference in lifestyle with Outkast playin as I write this.
"I'm sorry Miss Jackson - ooohh - I am for real", people speakin english to us, feel like a real tourist today for the first time in brasil.
Sayin good byes are always bizarre to me. Especially to people that there is literally no chance of seein again. Its kind of, "have a good life" stuff.
Hopefully we will return one day.

Eat Sleep Drink Coca-Cola

As its our last week on the base we have set a couple of going away gifts for some of the guys that we have met. Yesterday it was Celso's turn. He loves to drink Coca-Cola. Whenever he drinks coke he always shouts out 'a te gloria' as appreciation for his love of it. Because of this we decided to fill his room with 18 bottles of coke and wait until he returned. Of course when he did he was a very happy man! Its a shame that its our last week here. Time has gone so quickly and none of us want to leave....there is even talk of us never returning home!!!

Same Place, Different Crowd

Flamengo 2 - 1 Ipiranga (Copa do Brasil - Semi Final)

<img style="DISPLAY: block; We´ve agreed to take 6 Norweigens from a DTS group down to Ipenema beach. We set off around 8.30 to try and maximise our beach time. With our intimate knowledge of the rio buses, we manage to navigate our way through the rush hour traffic to the beach. Picture this white sand, blue sky, 9 twenty something years olds with a whole day to kill. 30 minutes laters while swimming in the surf, one of the young ladies of the group looses her bikini top, while struggling to perserve her dignity, a large wave comes along and creams her. As she hobbles out of the waves it´s clear that her knee is in a bad way. We alert the lifeguard and he inturn calls for an ambulance. This is then the first of a few culture shocks. When the ambulance arrives there´s a little cross languauge barrier banter, little strange at their relaxed attitude when a girl´s still rolling around in pain. Then they ask me and Helger (one of the norweigen crew) to carry her from the beach to the ambulance. Strange request when there´s 4 big brazilian paramedics whose job I assumed was this sort of thing, anyway we were in no position to negociate. We decide that Helgar and I would get into the ambulance while kev and al take the rest of the group to try to meet us there. Culture shock number two: this ambulance was the slowest, most curtious ambulance I´ve ever seen. The driver had he´s lights on yet was still stopping at red lights still giving way to other road users. At this point i attempted to cheer the poor girl (also know as Jodi) up, I told her about the last time I was in an ambulance, which involved my ex girlfriend, Lords cricket ground, and a very drunk Tom Hill. To this she expressed a degree of pleasure for the story and a deep desire never to meet Tom!

At the hospital we were again greeted by the same relaxed attitude as on the beach, this is where my portuguese was found well and truely wanting, and resulted in a pantamine between me and the doctor. Then we come to culture shock three: the doctor told us that Jodi would need an x-ray on the 2nd floor, cool I said and both parties stop and looked at each other. I was expecting hospital staff to come and take the poor girl up to the x-ray, in reality my job as interpreter now turned into hospital porter. Luckly x ray translates very well into portuguse and a cool 15 minutes later we arrive. Luckly the x-rays show no brake just suspected ligament damage, meanwhile the boys rock up from the beach. This is where Kev´s knee medical knowledge becomes invaluable and can guess what the doctors saying. Usual story she´ll need a MRI scan when the swelling goes down to see the full extent to the damage. Last culture shock: they don´t have crutches of any description in the hospital, but there is a shop that rents them 10 minutes away. So we roll over there by taxi as I run in to pick up some crutches, I mimic to the receptionist my need for crutches as I´ve forgetten all portuguse at this point, she gives me a form to fill in in order to rent. The form asks for an address and a telephone number! Do you know the feeling you get then you finally realise the thing you´ve been meaning to do for weeks and it´s to late to do anything about. Huge problem. After many minutes of pigeon portuguse discussion (the taxi´s still on the meter outside) I finally get though to him the fundamentals behind the whole deposit idea. 20 minutes later and a huge whole in the wallet we off back to the base. On arrival back at the base, the norweigen group are greeted with simpathy, while I sit through a grulling interview about each little decision I made and whether I involved enough people in my decision making process. The latest on Jodi´s knee is that it feels a lot better today, and she´s due to have her scan on thursday, so your prayers for no serious damage would be appreciated.

Mastercard

Bus ticket to Copacabana = 18 Reis
Bus ticket to Miguel Couto Hospital = 6 Reis
Taxi to another Hospital to pick up Crutches = 12 Reis
Rental of Crutches = 50 Reis
Pain Killers = 55 Reis
Travel back home = 98 Reis
Other Expenses = 57 Reis
Bribing Policeman = 10 Reis
Ticket to go watch Flamengo play in the cup semi-final at the Maracana = Priceless

There are some things that money cant buy, for everything else there's Gringos!!

Food for thought!

A couple of days ago we took out the guy (Lazaro) who sorted it out for us boys to come to brasil. When he was 14 and a half he was involved heavily in the drug world of Rio. He carried four guns and would threaten people who did not follow orders of the drug barons. One day whilst carrying his four guns, he came across something that he should not have seen (story not fully told!). Acting on instinct he shot an older lad (17ish) three times in the chest and killed him. The police caught him in the act and he was eventually convicted of the crime and sentenced to juvenile jail. After three years he was released. Two days after returning to his home (or shack), the police came knocking on his door. After opening the door, the police shot two bullets into the back of his head. He fell down, remembering that he got kicked in the face while on the floor and shot a further 6 times.

After being shot he went into an unconscious state and lay on the floor for 9 hours before somebody found him. Eventually, when someone did find him he was taking to hospital, where it was said that he had sustained too many injuries for it to be worthy to save his life. He was placed on a trolley and wheeled into the autopsy room. Upon arrival into the autopsy room, he woke from his unconscious state, causing the hospital staff to react quickly, making a decision to try and save him. After major surgery, including some body parts being removed (!) he waited in hospital. After the op he was told that the gun shot wound to the back of his spine, would paralyse him so that he would never walk again. 15 days later he was discharged from hospital, walking ok, but still with three bullets inside his body. To this day he still has those bullets inside him.

Nowadays this man runs a ywam base in one of the favela slums in Rio. He is a reformed Christian who still has major scars all over his body from when he was shot 8 times. He is quite possibly one of the happiest men that i have ever met, yet he has led a very tough life. Today we met Junoir Biano whilst sanding walls, washing floors, building houses and shoveling shit. Just another day and another crazy story living in brasil!

Esta doente!

Foz and his hareem of very young ladies!

Us boys in the burger bar getting our photo taken for their wall of fame. They think we play pro football for Americano. Lost in translation!

On friday, the whole base went to a church in a town just outside of Rio somewhere, about 45 mins away. The brasileiros, and i think ywamers in general love over-officiating everything, so the weekend was sold as a 'conference'. We got there late friday night to discover that our beds were non-existent, and that we had a choice - tiles or chairs. We went for chairs.
Some random brazilian guy decided to keep us awake by playing mission impossible on his mobile phone. thanks for that mate. Got up at like 6.30 and had a cold shower on the saturday, and waited around a little before goin to a 'meeting' and then went to some school round the corner to entertain some kids (well, that was our purpose anyways). The school system is very much less formal than in england. There must have been about 20 of us and we were able to waltz in to a school and invade their assembly and P.E. lesson which was cool. Played some overly competitve football before headin back for lunch. We weren't able to leave the football before we had given our e-mail addresses to everyone there, so theres gonna be a lot of denials going on next time I log on to msn!!! Went back to the church for a quick bite before repeating the exercise again in the afternoon at the same school with different kids.
The rest of the 'conference' was spent eating more of those x tudo burgers that kevo posted about, absolutely canny. And meeting loads of Brazilians. On Sunday night we were swamped by kids with all three of us receiving more attention than we´ve had all year. It seems easier to communicate with the kids as there on similar wave lengths as ourselves! Good weekend overall.
The bus ride back home was quality. The brasilians love their music and dancing so we were riding the bus with half the people standin up in the aisle dancing while a couple of people in the back banged (not sure what the past tense is for bang, bung would be too much of a pun in this corrupt country!!) on drums. Pretty quality, although not if you wanted to get some sleep at midnight!

Brasilian Footy

This week a game of football fell for the under 17 Rio Jocum football team that was perhaps the biggest in their history. On Wednesday the team took the field against professional youth outfit Fluminese. Unfortunately from the off you could see that the Fluminese team were physically fitter and far stronger than the Jocum team. The boys from the Jocum team got out passed and out skilled, ending the game in a 10-0 defeat. However to their credit they did not give up til the final whistle. Not the best start to our managerial careers in Brazil.

Since arriving in Brasil we have been working with these boys on a regular basis, trying to teach them something about football that they didnt already know. The technical ability from most of the kids is amazing, yet the lack of strength and communication lets the team performances down. Over the next few weeks we will continue to work with these kids and hopefully inspire them to do something decent with their lives, not just on the footy pitch. The photo below is of the whole team, including some of the guys from the base who look after the football teams.

favela life

this week we have been working in two of the favelas (slums) in rio. the first was called 'dupla brunei' and the second 'complexo'. life in the favelas for the large part is not as we expected. life seems to be really relaxed and the people are generally friendly, even tho the living conditions are extremely bad.

the complexo favela is based on two large hills that face each other. each hill is run by rival drug baron gangs (called the 3rd commandent and the commando verhmallo -or the red command). it is expected that no-one from opposing hills should try to sell drugs on the other ones patch. if someone does then there is generally violence, but this only occurs once every 3-4 months, leaving the hills peaceful the rest of the time! during the short time we were there, i did see one person with a huge AK-47 but for some reason you dont feel scared.

at complexo we helped a family with 22 members! 12 children and 6 grand children lived in two very small houses combined together. both houses had one bedroom, 'sitting room', kitchen and broken toilet. their house had been made very poorly and we joined in to help repair some of the walls, roof and doors. around the house there was a horrible smell from the kids urinating in the street, and sewage flowing on walkways that made working very difficult. after we finished with the building for the day, our leader said a prayer with the family as they were looking to save some money for a waterbox for the roof. however with no male figures around, and only two sisters working it is very hard for them to save any money at all. it was a very depressing day for us, but also a very good insight into favela life.

on a brighter note, we did have the best burger ever in the favela. probably about 50p and it tasted so amazing. from the top of either hill you could see for miles across rio de janeiro. a beautiful site, hopefully a photo can be uploaded later.

the work done by ywam here is a slow process, but it definitely is helping. we visited a house that had already been improved and the difference was huge. hopefully we will return to the complexo favela in the future and help continue the work there. a great experience all round.

family we helped

legends at the favela base

A little bit of culture...

Just thought that you may want a small sample of brasilian life, so i´ve decided to give my perceptions of life out here.
> People out here love coffee. This can be seen cos they drink it a lot. Although i don´t think they enjoy the taste. Cos they absolutely bury any flavour with about 6 table spoons of sugar. Ridic.
> Bus drivers out here think that they are Colin McCrae.
> Locals like it when you attempt to speak the language. Whether this is cos they think your accent is ridiculous or they are glad that you are trying i´m not sure. We were at a bus station askin for directions once and the woman we were talking too almost cried with laughter. Quite embarrasing...
> Weather here is always warm. Every 3 or 4 days there is a huge thunder storm with terrential rain. That day usually falls on the day that we do our washing so our clothes won´t dry.
> Rio is a lot safer than péople try to make out
> There are three things that i have never seen so many of in my life before coming to brazil: Beans, rice and ants. (they don´t eat the ants by the way)
> There is an abundance of different fruits to eat. Some taste like soap but others are really nice. (sam Acai is so overrated).
> Kevo is addicted to guarana, which is like a natural red bull fruit and gives him three pairs of wings (apparently)
> Although a lot of people like football, i´ve met a surprising number of people who don´t. If they don´t they usually like volleyball.
> Chrisianity is strange. everyone in the country is religious to some degree. Often you will go past evangelical churches and there is some screaming coming out from there. Yesterday went past one and you could only see the hands of the preacher coming over the altar. Not sure what i think bout all that.
> Buildings. All (or most) of the residential areas are made of rubbish buildings with holes in the walls. Brick laying appears to be a lost art out here. The people carry on regardless though.
> Favela life seems very laid back. Probably cos the people don´t have jobs! Streets are small and very southern european in feel. Free flowing sewage over your sandal is not recomendable.

Pictores

Excuse the randomness, but felt that the blog was lacking in description of the pictoral kind. Naturally we headed to the beaches. These beaches are massive, beatiful white sand stretching down to a clean blue sea with the strongest swells (or rip curl, depending on your level of coolness) I´ve ever expirienced. There were hundreds of people playing beach soccer, vollyball, and strange games involving bats (none of which are cricket) all wearing next to nothing. I´d love to post some pictures of what these girls were wearing unfortunatly the senors (Al) were having none of it, so you´ll have to make do with the scenary. However, this was the beautiful side of Rio, we soon experianced the other side, every two minutes we had street sellers trying to sell us strange items, that they had made or possibly found in the gutter. Drug deallers walking over to you pretending to be interested in your day before offering you anything ever tested in the name of western mediciene. And while we were standing at the side of the road some kid on a bike tried to snatch my bag, unfortunatly for him it was attached to a 6´6" man in such a way that if the bag was gonna go anywhere so would I. And finally when we got back to the base, we heard that the prvious night there had been a drug dispute at the top of our road, the police came in guns blazzing, and killed two young boys. The boys were friends with a couple of the kids that we´ve worked with, yet another reminder of the great work been done at this base.
Stay beautiful,
God bless.

Maracana

rio has such a buzz, the people are constantly happy and seem to be giving us foreigners loads of encouragement, even tho are portugese is a little on the dodgy side.

on wednesday night, we went to the best footy game that ive seen in my life..well maybe not the standard of footy but the crowd atomsphere and support was electric. we went to the maracana (which was the biggest stadium in the world at one point) to watch flamengo play guarani. yes samuel, we have seen your team play at their home ground before you!

we drove in a mini bus up to the stadium where there was thousands of people all in the street, kinda like any premiership game really, all waiting to get inside the ground. once we got inside the ground we were able to stand anywhere within our section that we liked. people seemed to bunch together across half of the stadium, creating packed out stands in one half of the ground. soon after kick off flamengo scored their first goal and the crowd went crazy. all jumping and singing together. after that moment for the whole of the next 86 mins the crowd were never quiet. i have never seen anything like it at a footy game before. at one point 15,000 fans in one quarter all took off their shirts and spun them around their heads at the same time. it looked amazing, and i came away a flamengo supporter. the game finshed 5-1 to flamengo, which left our brazilans friends who went with us, with very sore throats! even after the game as we walked out onto the street, the fans were constantly chanting and singing as loud as they could.

no premiership game (well apart from liverpool beating spurs 6-3 when rushy scored his 300th goal) could compare to it. u will have to ask the other guys if they feel the same way, but i loved it. i cant imagine what it would be like if they had lost 5-1 tho??

Brasileiro

Been a while since the last update, also sorry for the lack of pics but no-can-do at the moment.

Since the last post, we have arrived in Brasil...via 40 hours of flying and some pig intestine. Yummy.
Anyways, have arrived to a tranquil place just outside rio de janeiro. Inside the base is very peaceful, surrounded by quite high walls. Outside is a very poor area, kev keeps on goin on about the hustle and bustle nature of the country. Apparently, according to him, "It is kicking off".
Everyone here is friendly, they all wear smiles constantly. People who can, try to speak in english for the dumb foreigners that we are. We are trying with our portuguese and having to learn fast.
Today was the first day of work here. We did some maintenance work in the morning before heading out to a local school in the afternoon. The classes are mad. Theres like 100 kids in these open-walled rooms all screaming and shouting, sounds like a swimming pool on a bank holiday. Not sure how they are kept under control.
We went there with a team from the base who did some dancing stuff for the kids for Easter, and we were like the zoo animals that come along to be pointed at. Well wierd. After the talk all the kids came up and were crowding round me kev and nick for autographs. I have to admit my ego is ridic big right now.
Anyways we get up at like 6 every mornin, and its a long hot day so gonna hit the hay.
Hope your all doing well
Al.

Welcome To Dubai : The City Of Gold

<img style="FLOAT: left;
